Have you ever run any type of business Woodworking? My husband has 10 years experience in custom cabinetry. The last 5, he oversaw the department arrival. I am encouraging him to open his own shop, but I'm curious to see up and down industry. Any change of career that you could suggest would be appreciated. Any other small business idea would be great. He is unhappy with quality companies and is ready to move forward. Thank you.
Since you've never been in business before, I highly recommend you speak to a business advisor before anything especially spend money. You must determine if you start a business based on the Web or a storefront. I would call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and enter your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is free.
The SCORE counselor will most likely advise you to write a business plan that is good advice because it will force you to dig any details of startup costs and start a carpentry business and force you also to understand all aspects of the company, including customers, you concentrate on (your market) and how you go after them.
You will need to register the business with the office of your state comptroller and make sure you have the whole city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All this comes in a business plan.
