How do I change my legal name in Virginia if the name of my father has never known? I am 22, I was born in Kenya. I am a permanent resident and I reside in the State of Virginia. I want to change my name. The name change forms Virginia requesting the names and surnames of both parents. I know the name of my mother, but not my father. The problem is, I lost contact with my mother years ago, and it never told me his name. All I know is that we abandonded shortly after I was born (in Kenya), and my mother never spoke of him. My mother brought me to the U.S. when I was 11.
There are no records of the existence of my father across the United States, because I'm pretty sure he has never been in the United States. I have no birth certificate in all registers of civil status in the United States (because I was born in Kenya). So what should I ask about the forms of Virginia name change when he asks the name of my father?
You must write "unknown" if you're asked about it tell them the truth.
You should write what it says on your birth certificate, probably "not known" or "Unknown"
