Moving before the operating mode: Starting a new business in tough times I thought I understood everything. I guess every new business owner imagines what makes great ... or at least is quite sure of himself that he can not make ends meet with his company.
Thinking back many years, I vaguely remember my parents singing, "Location. Location. Location." But what were they talking about? Frankly, I do not remember. Probably, they tried to dissuade me from renting my first apartment in a complex known to party, riots and police chases. Although the lesson was lost when the message is to focus today.
My best guess is that when most people start new, small businesses, they tend to stay close to home, choosing a company they expect to work where they live rather than a location that suits best for their business. I started with a mixture of both.
When I decided I could not take the humidity and lack of topographic relief of Florida has to offer, I decided to return to San Diego: the land of perfect climate. And in doing so, I thought, what better place to start a window cleaning business? "No buckets filled with antifreeze as mandatory in Michigan, lest you break a window with a window frozen mop. 364 days of sunshine and heat (it has to rain some time) was perfect for a outdoor living. As I had spent some time considering starting my own window cleaning company and had now decided on San Diego, everything fell into place quickly
Can you identify a situation yet? No? Me neither
After the filing of documents with the city, buying insurance, and a truck, I am doing research on advertising. The directory listed subway almost a hundred companies under "window cleaning". Is this true? A hundred? How could this information have dropped there really that many people in a city trying to make a living washing windows? Ago, and now it is a plus.
As expected, competition is fierce here. I spent several days with swing doors ads literally on those of my competitors. Suddenly cleaning windows are everywhere. We live three houses from me! There are many competitors, Fortunately for me, but many of them are not trained in both the industry and, equally importantly, in customer relations. But even if some of them have less than the height of the industry, the guy next door is always there to reinforce in his absence. So what am I doing here?
Some might say that I pay for my mistake, they would say that I package it and try again elsewhere. Some days I would agree. Had I spent a little more time looking for the site I started my business, a 50 mile travel in one direction or another could have done my job to find new customers much easier. But, alas, I continue to. I will continue to fight for every customer I can, and rather than be lax about their care might be more easily and at a place I will do everything in my power to keep them for years future.
