Thinking of starting a coffee and sandwich shop in the United Kingdom? The market for coffee and sandwich shops continues to grow in the branded sector, both in terms of number of outlets and sales to major operators, despite the reported saturation in the market. However, the growth of brand shops is the responsibility of progressive multiple small and independent minor, as the majors expand outside London and the South East in the high streets popular historic, university and tourist towns. They are also gaining new business outside of town shopping centers, concessions in other retail outlets, and travel locations such as stations, airports and motorway service stations. The profitability of branded operators is assisted by the fact that outlets outside London, in particular, are likely to reach a level of profit more quickly than those in high-rental prime locations in central London.
Growth was driven by continued increases in the proportions of 45-54 years in the total population, ABS and women in employment who are all clients of the first coffee and sandwich. The preference for eating at these sites, rather than having longer and more expensive lunches in restaurants, is supported by the need to continue to short lunch in a busy working life. In addition, many women choose to eat at coffee and sandwich shops, as they are perceived to offer an atmosphere more "light" and more friendly.
The leaders in the segment of branded coffee shops are Starbucks, Costa and Caffe Nero, while their brand-name counterparts in sandwich-shop segment are Subway, Pret A Manger, Bakers Oven, O'Brien and Benjys. This is to gain market opportunities in sectors of total mark, thanks to offer a wider range of food and beverages. They are often higher-margin items, improved profitability, with this tactic that blurs the distinction between coffee and sandwich shops in general.
