New business ideas by turning things upside down
It is a technique to produce truly creative new ideas. It is based on how your mind tries to make sense of everything you put in front of her. What you put in front of it is ideas and approaches that have been turned on their head.
For example, if you have a bookstore, you can start by making a list of how things are now. Add to that all the assumptions and plans that you have taken into account. It may seem absurd to write some of these obvious facts, and some opposing ideas they suggest will look even more stupid. But it is a powerful way to get out of the box with your thinking and begin to generate new business ideas.
"Purchase of chairs and lamps," becomes "sell chairs and lamps." Silly? Not necessarily. You can generate a decent income selling additional things readers want. "We sell books," becomes "We buy books "This suggests several possibilities as I write this.
Buy used books, but only paying the credit could keep customers coming back and provides a secondary library used. Not a new idea, but it may be new to your business. Or how about you offer to show self-publisher books on consignment. No investment except space, and these writers will send your family and friends to your store to buy their books.
Turn "People buy books to read on the head and you get what sounds crazy," People read books to buy. "Where could you go with this? As mentioned previously, our minds try to understand things no matter how illogical they seem at first. My mind quickly invented a book that was interesting enough for a reader to read, but also the promotion of a dozen other books produced by the store. It could be sold cheap or given away as prizes.
People read and then buy something more. "Read to buy," can not be so crazy after all. Why not try to turn things upside down for new business ideas?
