How do I change my name after marriage legal in California? When we completed our application for marriage license we left the game in the bottom of the page regarding changes of name in white. For many reasons, I wanted to keep my maiden name at the time but now wish to take my surname husband. The only valid marriage certificate to change my name or leave blank the section that I have made the process longer and more expensive for me?
My wife and I just did this back in February, so I hope this helps.
1. Go to the Social Security site and download and complete Form SS-5. Bring this completed form with your signature and certificate of marriage in the office of social security. You will get your card in about 3wks.
2. After obtaining your new Social Security card, visit your local DVM with your new Social Security card and make a name change. I think it cost $ 25?
3. After these two steps are done, go ahead and update your new name with your creditors, the accounts you have (gymnastics club passport, banking, etc.).
The other option (and it's longer, especially with the county courts are closed to help the deficit) is going through your county court to change its name. But as you can see on the CA Web site courts, this option is only AFTER you try for Social Security / DMV and they tell you that you must go to court:

Good luck and Congratulations on marriage!
Good luck!
So, could you change it? Flag
