Finally OSCAR goes to the hospital: Do not be fascinated when I say OSCAR for the hospital. OSCAR is here Open Source Clinical Application Resource and not concerned by Oscar in Hollywood. OSCAR is a freeware open source products. It is a medical software. Open Source software products can be freely downloaded by anyone with the codes. They can be reviewed and redesigned for other uses. OSCAR open source medical software is delivered with General Public License (GPL) which guarantees that it is freely available, at no cost. General Public License also grants rights to individuals to develop and distribute medical software. OSCAR was launched by the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University in 2001. This open source medical was introduced in order to produce the Web-based EMR to support various studies and clinical staff. Since its inception in 2001, he covered the globe, many towns and cities and the number of users is increasing day by day. Along with the other support services on OSCAR also entered the scene. Support for businesses with services such as server installation, maintenance, user training and support have increased with the growth of the use OSCAR. The user base of OSCAR as of May 2009 reached a level of 700-800 users in places like British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and PEI. Ontario and British Columbia topped the list with the largest number of users. This open source medical grew huge percentage of 75% in facilities for the year 2008 than the previous year. It is able to maintain the same pace in 2009 as well. This web based EMR product, being an open source product, is widely recognized.
A typical approach has been taken based in Ontario to select the web based EMR and OSCAR proved to be the best in each. There are major contributors to the Oscar project and they are large institutions such as McMaster University, McGill University, City of Toronto, business support OSCAR user groups and independent clinical and users.
